Digital Schoolhouse

Posted: 20th November 2019

We are delighted to announce Burgess Hill Girls is officially a Digital Schoolhouse.  Sussex primary schools are now invited to book their Year 5 or 6 classes onto one of our free Marvellous Maths or Logical Literacy workshops.

What is Digital Schoolhouse?

Digital Schoolhouse has been created in partnership with Nintendo UK and The Association for UK Interactive Entertainment (UKIE).  It uses play-based learning to engage the next generation of pupils and teachers with the computing curriculum.  This learning is achieved via ingenious literacy and numeracy themed computing workshops aimed at local primary schools. The workshops are delivered by a network of recognised Digital Schoolhouses and lead teachers. Burgess Hill Girls was appointed as a Digital Schoolhouse in October 2019 and the lead teacher is Jo Tooth.

Workshops

From November 2019 until April 2020 Burgess Hill Girls is offering two free workshops for boys and girls in Year 5 and 6 classes at Sussex primary schools.

Marvellous Maths – Make a Funky Shape Calculator Using Algorithms

We’ll warm you up with a quick session demonstrating how algorithms are used in common games and activities.  Then we’ll dive in and make our own personal robot that creates different shapes using algorithms.  Children will combine their understanding of geometry with computing concepts including variables, operators, sequencing, selection and iteration.

Logical Literacy – Create Stories With A Twist Using Algorithms

We’ll warm you up with a quick session showing how adding a story to a card trick makes it more interesting.  Then we will all create our own stories, using algorithms to decide the different twists and turns our story will take to make it completely unique.  Children will combine their understanding of narrative, nouns, verbs and adjectives with computing concepts including variables, sequencing, selection and iteration.

The workshops last three hours and are offered on every Monday of the school term between 10.30am and 2.00pm.  We will customise the workshops to suit your school curriculum and pupils’ knowledge.  Refreshments are provided but we ask you to bring a packed lunch.
