A Christmas Carol 2024

Posted: 27th November 2024

Our recent Year 7-9 performances of A Christmas Carol were a huge success, delighting audiences with their take on this timeless classic. The cast, who skilfully navigated Dickens’ intricate language, kicked off the Christmas season with a spookier flair, making this a truly memorable production. With Rosie Holden and Annabel Clark alternating the role of Ebenezer Scrooge, the show was a testament to the hard work and dedication of the cast (Years 7-9) and crew (Years 8-10 and 12), who worked with a reduced rehearsal schedule yet still gave their all.

Directed by our very own Beatriz Pereira, the production was inspired by her love for one of England’s most curious Christmas traditions: telling ghost stories. Beatriz shared her vision for the show, recalling her first Christmas in England: “I was so confused when I watched a rather terrifying ghost story on the BBC while trying to digest my Christmas dinner and force down another mince pie.”  Inspired by this experience, Beatriz sought to recreate that eerie atmosphere on stage, bringing a spooky yet festive mood to the production.

And that’s exactly what the production achieved. The eerie mood was enhanced by the haunting staging and atmospheric lighting design, immersing the audience in a world of spectral visits. The talented girls portraying the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Christmas Present and Christmas Yet to Come beautifully brought the story’s message to life, reminding us of the importance of compassion, community, and the true meaning of Christmas.

The cast fully embodied the director’s vision, capturing the essence of a classic tale that resonates year after year. A Christmas Carol is not just a story about ghosts, but a powerful reminder that money doesn’t buy happiness. The heart-warming characters, like the Cratchits, show us that the best in people shines through even in the toughest times.

This enchanting and slightly spooky production was the perfect way to welcome in the festive season, leaving both cast and audience with the spirit of Christmas and a reminder of the timeless lessons of Dickens’ tale.

What a wonderful way to begin the Christmas festivities!
