Senior Christmas Concert 2024

Posted: 9th December 2024

On Thursday, December 5, 2024, the Senior School Christmas Concert transformed a winter evening into a magical celebration of music and festive cheer. The event began with a bang as the Development Orchestra performed Ghostbusters, complete with the students dressed as ghosts, infusing humour and energy into their lively playing. Their delightful rendition of Chattanooga Choo-Choo kept spirits high, setting the tone for an evening filled with creativity and talent.

The Intermediate Cello Ensemble delivered a beautiful performance of Away in A Manger and Unto Us A Boy is Born, bringing a serene and reflective moment to the programme. The Flute Ensemble then took the audience on a whimsical journey with If Only I Had a Brain from The Wizard of Oz, performing in charming costumes inspired by the film’s beloved characters.

Tracey Yang’s Guzheng solo, Battling the Typhoon, was a standout moment, showcasing a unique and evocative sound that captivated everyone in Croft II Performance. Another highlight was the performance of Vivaldi’s Concerto for Two Cellos in G Minor by Ashley Song and Millie Bryant-Nichols, whose skilful and emotive playing brought a classical elegance to the evening. Adding to the excitement, the orchestra’s rendition of How the Grinch Stole Christmas featured the Grinch as a guest conductor (Mr Black), fully embracing his role, much to the audience’s delight.

The rock band brought infectious energy to the stage with their rendition of Fairytale of New York, joined by special guest singers and beloved staff members Emily Quinn and Bryn Roberts. Their lively duet brought laughter, applause, and festive joy to the crowd. The jazz and rock bands kept the tempo high with memorable pieces such as Zombie by The Cranberries and Shallow by Lady Gaga and Mark Ronson.

One of the most poignant moments of the evening came with the choir’s performance of Grown-Up Christmas List. This moving piece speaks of a wish for world peace, the end of wars, and for everyone to have a friend. Its message of kindness and unity tied meaningfully to the concert’s charitable aspect, as proceeds were collected for The Pantry, a local community initiative helping those in need. This connection reminded everyone that the festive season is as much about giving and supporting others as it is about celebration.

The concert ended with a rousing finale. The orchestra and choir led a sing-along of Silent Night and We Wish You a Merry Christmas, bringing everyone together in a shared celebration. The talent and enthusiasm of the students and staff truly shone throughout the evening. The concert was a joyous showcase of the musical life at Burgess Hill Girls and a memorable highlight of the festive season.
