Today Byron Bond and his colleague Amelia Mills from TP ICAP Group, London visited Sixth Form students to share insights into the credit market, providing students with valuable knowledge about this key financial sector.
Byron explained how stockbroking has transformed significantly since the 1980s and 1990s. Once characterised by trading floors filled with vocal brokers, the industry has been revolutionised by technological advancements. He delivered a fascinating overview of stock market history, including the 2007-2009 debt crisis, notable bank collapses and subsequent mergers.
The session included engaging discussions on industry mergers, financial regulation and the future landscape of credit markets. Mr Bond shared his personal career journey, encouraging students to embrace their individual personalities and pursue careers aligned with their interests and strengths.
The Sixth Formers particularly connected with Amelia Mills, a recent graduate who studied Mathematics at Durham University. After completing a 10-week internship with TP ICAP, she secured a position as a Business Analyst with the firm. Amelia’s academic background in mathematics, combined with her interest in finance, provided an inspiring example for students considering similar career paths.
Both speakers offered a clear explanation of broking, describing it as “a handshake between one bank and another” – a simple yet effective illustration of their crucial intermediary role in financial markets.
This insightful session provided the girls with valuable perspectives on potential careers in the financial sector and the various pathways available to them after completing their studies. The icing on the cake was Byron offering work experience to students who are considering a career in this financial sector.
