Our Sixth Form Student Grace Dobson Honoured at Parliament

Posted: 12th March 2025

Three of our Upper Sixth students recently experienced British democracy first-hand with a prestigious visit to the Houses of Parliament. The occasion was particularly significant as Grace Dobson, who balances her academic studies with her role as a member of the West Sussex Youth Cabinet, was honoured with a Democracy Award for her contributions.

Grace’s prestigious award recognises her outstanding commitment to promoting democratic participation throughout West Sussex. Her success exemplifies the leadership qualities we cultivate at Burgess Hill Girls, where students are encouraged to develop confidence, initiative, and a strong sense of social responsibility.

“At Burgess Hill Girls, we believe in empowering young women to find their voice and make a meaningful impact in society,” says Heather Cavanagh, Head of Burgess Hill Girls. “Grace’s achievement perfectly demonstrates how our students transform their educational experiences into positive action in the wider world.”

Grace was accompanied on her trip by two of her classmates, Hannah and Francesca. The teacher supporting the trip was Dionne Flatman, Head of Economics, Politics and Business at Burgess Hill Girls, who has previously been accredited as a Gold Level UK Parliament Teacher Ambassador.

The Parliament visit represents just one of the many enriching opportunities available to our students. At Burgess Hill Girls, education extends far beyond academic excellence, encompassing real-world experiences that prepare young women for future success.

This recognition highlights our school’s commitment to character education. Alongside academic rigour, Burgess Hill Girls prioritises the development of attributes such as civic responsibility, ethical leadership, and the confidence to advocate for positive change.

Grace’s involvement with the West Sussex Youth Cabinet and her crucial role in the 2024-26 youth election process demonstrates how our students apply these values in practical settings, making meaningful contributions to their communities while still at school.

Helping ‘Tomorrow’s Women’ Make a Difference

As we celebrate Grace’s well-deserved award, we’re reminded of Burgess Hill Girls’ proud tradition of educating young women who go on to make significant contributions across all sectors of society.

Our  programme of leadership opportunities, combined with outstanding academic preparation, ensures Burgess Hill Girls students graduate ready to thrive in their chosen fields and make their voices heard on issues that matter.

We invite prospective families to learn more about our approach to developing confident, articulate young women ready to shape the future. To arrange a personal tour of our school or to attend an upcoming Open Day, please contact our Admissions team on 01444 241050.
