Sixth Form Biology Field Trip to Flatford Mill Field Studies Centre

Posted: 17th October 2025

Our Sixth Form Biology students recently spent three days at Flatford Mill Field Studies Centre, developing their practical skills and deepening their understanding of ecological concepts through first-hand experience.

Set in the heart of John Constable country in Suffolk, Flatford Mill provided an inspiring backdrop for the girls to consolidate their classroom learning. The Mill and Willy Lott’s House, both featured in Constable’s iconic Haywain painting, added a unique historical and artistic dimension to the visit.

During their stay, the students explored local ecosystems, carried out a range of ecological investigations, and even visited the nearby coastline to study succession in action. These field experiences not only strengthened their scientific understanding but also encouraged teamwork, problem-solving, and independent thinking.

At Burgess Hill Girls, we believe that the best learning happens both inside and outside the classroom. Our smaller class sizes mean every student has the opportunity to take part in enriching, hands-on experiences like this, ensuring personalised attention and a deeper connection to their studies.

The trip culminated in the students producing their own video to document their experiences — a wonderful record of their learning, creativity, and enthusiasm for the natural world.
