The Upper Sixth are celebrating a superb set of A level results with 85.4% graded A*-B including the EPQ, with 65% of entries at A*/A. Over two thirds of the cohort got three A*-B grades at A level.
Results in the Extended Project Qualification were outstanding, with 96% A*-A grades and 74% achieving an A*. The EPQ is a required element of the Sixth Form BOLD programme at Burgess Hill Girls.
The girls’ diverse interests and aspirations, together with expert and individually tailored university application support, means the majority will take up places at their first or second choice universities. Girls applied for 158 distinct university courses from over 50 different universities, both here in the UK and overseas. Course choices ranged widely from History and Politics to Game Art, from Civil Engineering to Classics.
Top performers include Emily, who is off to read Modern and Medieval Languages at the University of Cambridge after securing A* grades in French and History and an A grade in German, together with an A* EPQ determining the French Revolution’s greatest impact on women’s place in society. Esme joins her at Cambridge to read Classics, with an A* in Classical Civilization and A grades in English Literature and Latin. Esme’s A* EPQ explored how the trope of dragons evolved in English Literature. Charlotte, a Burgess Hill Girl since the nursery, achieved straight A grades in History, English Literature and Politics. Together with an A* EPQ comparing the democratic longevity of parliamentary and presidential systems, Charlotte will take up her place to read History and Politics at Oxford University.
Bukky Oseni’s straight A*/A profile in Economics, Biology and Chemistry A with an A* EPQ on the most efficient methods to reduce the rate of maternal mortality in Nigeria, puts her in pole position to take up her place at Columbia University, New York. Bukky is hoping to major in Law. Holly’s off to York to read English Literature after her clean sweep of A* grades in English Literature, Classical Civilization and Psychology and an A* EPQ exploring why we tell fairy tales. Francesca gained straight A* grades in English Literature, Religious Studies and Psychology, and an A* in her EPQ on whether people join religious cults because they have been brainwashed. Francesca is taking a gap year.
Over 85% of the cohort took at least one STEM subject and many have won university places on STEM courses. Jessica’s straight A* grades in Biology, Chemistry and PE and an EPQ looking at gender verification in elite sport. A keen and accomplished sportswoman, Jessica completed ‘P24 the Longest Day’ on the summer solstice in 2020, running a mile on the hour over a 24 hour period, raising £1300 for charity. Jessica intends to apply for Medicine next year. Teresa goes to Leeds to read Civil and Structural Engineering and Tricia goes to UCL to read Applied Medical Sciences with a straight A*/A profile.
Humanities, social science and creative courses remain popular choices and results in these subject disciplines are impressive. Jessica’s superb straight A*/A profile leads to her reading Geography at Durham. Jasmine achieved three A*s and is on her way to study illustration at Middlesex and Louise’s excellent grades take her to study Game Art at DeMontfort.

The level of resilience, perseverance and commitment they have displayed throughout their A level studies is praiseworthy considering they were deprived of sitting any formal GCSE examinations. They have certainly risen to the challenge and we are immensely proud of them all today.”
Liz Laybourn added: “Some students, in particular, showed considerable adaptability in attending online lessons during the night in countries such as Hong Kong to ensure they received their taught lessons with their fellow students. It is testament to their dedication that they receive results that they thoroughly deserve. We wish all students the very best as they now prepare to go to the university of their choice.”
