Why Giving Young Women a Voice Matters

Posted: 15th July 2026

Burgess Hill Girls student Viola was honoured with a Democracy Recognition Award at Chichester City Council following her team’s successful participation in the West Sussex Youth Cabinet Elections 2026–2028.

The award recognises the commitment shown by students engaging with the democratic process and ensuring young people’s voices are represented in local decision-making.

The West Sussex Youth Cabinet is made up of 48 young people aged 11–18 from across the county and aims to give young people a meaningful voice in issues affecting their communities. Through campaigning, voting and representation, participants gain valuable experience in leadership, communication and advocacy.

At Burgess Hill Girls, we believe that giving young women opportunities to engage in democracy helps build the confidence and skills they need to become future leaders. Whether their aspirations lie in business, healthcare, engineering, aviation, public service or entrepreneurship, learning to express their views, influence decisions and represent others is an important foundation for success.

We are incredibly proud of Viola and all the students who took part in the elections, as well as the staff who encouraged participation and voter engagement throughout the process.

By empowering girls to use their voices today, we are helping to shape confident, capable young women who will make a positive impact on society tomorrow.
