Exploring Ice

Posted: 15th February 2017

At Burgess Hill Nursery our First steps to science are to let the children test their ideas… they need time develop their own ideas.

We wanted to introduce ‘Ice’ and support the children’s understanding of how ice is made. So to start with we organised an unstructured activity: We gave the children a plastic bowl of ice cubes and let them play. The goal was to let the children make their own discoveries. Things we observed them doing were: stirring, stacking, licking and tasting and manoeuvring along with lots of discussion, descriptive words and encouragement from each other.
