Burgess Hill Girls is seeking an inspiring and ambitious Head of English to lead our highly regarded English Faculty. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced English specialist who can provide strategic leadership across Key Stages 3–5 and drive excellence in teaching, learning, curriculum design, and whole‑school priorities.

We are looking for someone who is passionate about English, committed to nurturing a love of literature and language, and ready to take a leading role in the academic development of students. This is a TLR1 role, reflecting the strategic scope of the position, including cross‑school leadership contributions and the oversight of a core subject and Latin.

As Head of the English Faculty, you will:

  • Provide strategic leadership and long‑term direction for the Faculty, ensuring high‑quality teaching and learning across all subjects and key stages.
  • Lead and manage a dedicated team of teachers, supporting their development, wellbeing, and professional growth.
  • Oversee curriculum design, continuity, and progression across English Language and English Literature at KS3, KS4, and A Level.
  • Shape and implement the faculty’s quality assurance cycle, including learning walks, book looks, moderation, and student voice activities.
  • Lead the faculty’s approach to assessment, data analysis, intervention, and outcomes, ensuring strong progress for all learners.
  • Lead on and embed whole‑school priorities such as digital learning and high‑quality feedback.
  • Oversee and line manage the teaching of Latin.
  • Lead on whole-school literacy; supporting curriculum leaders in embedding best practice including line management of the LRC.
  • Take a proactive role in student recruitment, including open evenings, taster days, and promotion of English at KS4 and KS5.
  • Oversee the faculty budget, resources, and health and safety compliance.
  • Contribute to whole‑school leadership through active participation in Curriculum Leadership meetings, cross‑curricular initiatives and delivery of whole school CPD.
  • Teach an English timetable and model exemplary classroom practice.

You will have:

  • Qualified Teacher Status and strong subject expertise in English Language and/or English Literature.
  • A proven track record of excellent teaching across KS3 and KS4; KS5 experience is highly desirable.
  • Experience of leading or contributing to curriculum development, assessment, and quality assurance.
  • The ability to motivate, support, and challenge colleagues at all levels.
