The Lower Sixth Networking Dinner took place at Mid Sussex Golf Club on January 30, 2024. The evening gave all year 12 students the opportunity to meet professionals from a range of different industries, including architecture, politics and marketing.

The evening began with glasses of prosecco (or lemonade and orange juice) as students approached the different guests and posed them with questions related to their career paths.

Once all the guests had arrived and a sufficient amount of mingling was done, all guests and students took to their seats for the two-course meal. Every student was sat next to guests from a particular field of work that they are interested in. This gave everyone the opportunity to ask questions about what their work is truly like and get a better feel for the particular job. Some, after finding out what the career really entails, have found out that a role in this type of work is not for them. Others hope to get a sense of what the work is really like by exploring potential work experience with guests from the evening.

Between the delicious main course and dessert, guest speaker Tamara Roberts shared her experiences and advice with us. Tamara, who is currently CEO of Ridgeview, encouraged us to be resilient, explore different pathways and maintain a good work-life balance.

All in all, the evening was a complete success. Thank you to the staff of Burgess Hill Girls for organising the whole event and arranging for such fabulous and interesting guests to speak to us.

I think the main takeaway from the evening, if I were to mention just one, is that we do not have to be completely sure of what we want to do in the future. The guest speakers taught us that the path to success in a career is not linear, and it is completely okay to enter a career in a completely alternative way to what you had originally planned.
