Three of our Sixth Form girls, Grace, Louise, and Hannah, were honoured to attend the first-ever Girls Human Rights Awards, hosted by the Girls Human Rights Hub, on behalf of Justin North at Pickering Pearce. The event took place at Inner Temple Hall, one of London’s distinguished Inns of Court, and was a black-tie celebration recognising individuals that have made significant strides in advancing girls’ human rights, from local efforts to global impact.
After the event, we spoke with Grace, Louise, and Hannah, who shared their reflections on some of the inspiring individuals they had encountered. One of the key figures they highlighted was Georgiana Epure from Romania. As the Senior Advocacy and Campaigns Officer at Girls Not Brides: The Global Partnership to End Child Marriage, Georgiana leads global advocacy initiatives aimed at ending child marriage. Her work, in collaboration with teams across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean, is truly transformative, bringing attention to a crucial issue affecting millions of girls worldwide.
The girls were also deeply moved by Rebecca Rumsey, a student at Cardiff University who has dedicated herself to supporting survivors of sexual misconduct. Rebecca founded Time To Act, a group that works to provide a safe space for victims and survivors while also meeting with legislators, including the Minister for Violence Against Women and Girls, to raise awareness about the pervasive issue of sexual misconduct within higher education institutions.
The evening was a powerful reminder of the ongoing fight for gender justice, and the inspirational women leading the way. The event was chaired by Sultana Tafadar KC and her daughter Safiyah, aged 11. Together, they co-founded the Girls Human Rights Hub to advance gender equity and eradicate gender-based violence, empowering girls to take action and be part of the solution.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Justin North for inviting Grace, Louise, and Hannah to this impactful event. They were thrilled to be part of such an empowering evening and came away feeling inspired and motivated to contribute to the ongoing fight for girls’ rights.
