We hope you forgive the pun in the title, a spike is one of volleyball’s most recognisable shots, when a player slams down on the ball with one hand from above, often winning the point in the process. But volleyball is truly spiking at Burgess Hill Girls.
The school has only been playing it for a few years but we now run three teams starting with the Under 15’s, then Under 16’s and Under 18’s. The latter two teams are undefeated this season, with the Under 18’s taking part in an amazing tournament at Sevenoaks School in February, they won six out of six games versus strong opposition from London, Kent and Argentina.
In March we had our first Inter House Competition which Williams won. Some pictures are featured above and below with more on our Facebook page.
In addition to traditional volleyball, typically played indoor, the U16 team has also been playing in the beach volleyball league at Yellowave Beach Sports in Brighton. We will all be playing there on Thursday afternoons as part of our PE curriculum and will also enter a number of beach volleyball tournaments during the summer term.
In recent years, Bold Girl Peanut Meekings has played volleyball for the South East and England. With Year 13s Suzie and Ale playing in the National League for Sussex Dolphin Volleyball Club and Year 10s Ruby and Charlotte also playing high-level club volleyball, we are sure they and others will be following in Peanut’s footsteps in the future.
